In order to raise the youth issues in public, International Youth Day 2017 is celebrated along with various programs. International Youth Day is celebrated every year on August 12. This year International Youth Day is celebrated with the slogan “Youth Building Peace”. Youth Advocacy Nepal (YAN) in collaboration with like minded organization organized various program.The programs like Photo Action, Photo with Slogan Competition, Youth March for Sustainable Peace, Youth in Peace meditation, Candle light for Peace Promotion and Youth Dialogue on “Sustainable Peace, Livelihood and Role of Youth” was organized with an objective to celebrate International Youth Day.
Photo with Slogan Competition
Photo with slogan competition was organized with from 1-15 competition where 63 participants actively participated posting their photo in facebook page of YAN holding slogans related to youth day and the slogan related to International Youth Day 2017. The winners of the competition were declared on the midnight of 15 August on the basis of likes that they posted on facebook. The winners Ms. Supriya Gupta, Ms. Shweta Chaulagain and Ms. Manisha Chaulagain and other participants of the competition were awarded with prize and certificate in a formal program on 25 August 2017.
Youth March for Sustainable Peace
A Youth March for Sustainable Peace was organized on 12 August 2017 in collaboration with Ministry of Youth and Sports, National Youth Council and other like minded organizations with the slogan youth building peace. The march started at 8 a.m. from Bhrikuti Mandap and converted into a formal program at Rastriya Sabha Griha jointly organized by Ministry of Youth and Sports and National Youth Council. There were more than 1000 participants in the march.
Youth in Peace Meditation
Youth in Peace Meditation program was organized with an objective to involve young generation in peaceful mind and calmness. The program was organized on 13 August 2017 at 7 a.m. in support with Art of Living, Chabahil. The program was facilitated by Mr. Dipendra. The program was organized for two hours with 25 participants.
Candle Light for Peace Promotion
Candle Light for Peace Promotion program was organized on 13 August 2017 evening with an objective to deliver message of peace. The program was organized lighting candle at Pashupatinath Temple premises. The Youth engaged in different background were involved in the program.
Youth Dialogue on “Sustainable Peace, Livelihood and Role of Youth” and Certificate Distribution for Photo with Slogan Competition
Youth Dialogue on “Sustainable Peace, Livelihood and Role of Youth” was organized with an objective to celebrate International Youth Day 2017. The program was organized at Union House, Anamnagar on 25 August 2017. Senior Human Rights Activist Mr. Charan Prasain, Under secretary of Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr. Mahendra Poudel, Human Rights Activist and Researcher Mr. Bishnu Khatri and Representative from Action Aid Nepal Mr. Devendra Pratap Singh were the guest speaker of the program whereas Representative of Aide et Action Nepal Mr. Sujan Neupane presented the paper on the topic.
The program started with the paper presentation by the resource person Mr. Neupane. He initiated the presentation with the general concept of Youth. He said that youth is a very heterogeneous group encompassing people of various ethnicity, religion, race, gender, and class. Then he discussed about livelihood, unemployment. He said that livelihood is the means of securing the necessities of life. During presentation he also discussed about the consequences of unemployment. Then he discussed about youth, conflict and peace global scenario. He said youth are the primary actors in grassroots community development and are at the frontlines of peace building.He also explained why youths in the answer to this question he said youth as a power of change, open to change, future oriented, Idealistic and innovative courageous and having knowledge on peers’ realities. He also shared experiences with youth from different countries including Nepal. On the way forward he said Meaningful participation of youth in the peace building, truth and reconciliation processes shall be ensured, Youth organizations and institutions shall be involved in peace building and conflict resolution and such programs as to train and mobilize youth with a view to mitigating divisions appearing on grounds of class, ethnicity, language, region and sex shall be encouraged. The youth shall be encouraged to maintain national unity while respecting diversity.
In the program the winners and participants in the Photo with slogan competition were awarded with prize and certificate to the winners and distributed certificate to all the participant in the competition by under secretary from Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr. Mahendra Poudel.
Speaking at the program under secretary from Ministry of Youth and Sports Mr. Mahendra Poudel said that today’s need is the youth population and we have golden opportunity to graduate from least developing country. He said that our common goal is to achieve sustainable peace, development including peace. He also urged not to limit the program within seminar and conference but youths should be associated with labour market and employment.
Speaking at the program Mr. Mahendra Thapa, President of National Disable Youth Network, Nepal said that livelihood is related to peace. He said we make youth to learn many things but it is more associated with economy. He also said there are many challenges and talk about vulnerable and get into conclusion within that. He again said that training should be market oriented. So, Marketing is most important for the promotion of goods prepared by disables to motivate them.
Speaking at the program Mr. Pravin Kumar Regmi president of United Youth for world peace said global partner gets together we can get ultimate peace. Speaking at the program Mr. Devendra Pratap Singh; representative from Action Aid Nepal said in the context of Nepal and the history of Nepal we have four constitution and we discuss about fundamental rights and there is the need of laws and provision to implement those. He also shared his experiences the involvement of youth in political agenda are important but the same should be in the decision making level. He said we discuss about the context of sustainable development but unable to marketize our local product and frustration can be seen among consumer and production.
Speaking at the program Human Rights Activist and Researcher Mr. Bishnu Khatri said that livelihood should be associated with market. He said we have not enhanced the capacity to pay but we are able to enhance the capacity to deliver service. He said we have created many opportunities related to livelihood but we are not relating with market.
A representative from National Youth Council Ms. Mira Kafle said that most skilled people have the dream of developed countries and most of the youths are forced to get employed in gulf countries. She said youth are the change agent but they are still unknown about their future. Speaking at the program Ms. Kafle said that we should not fight to get elderly allowances but should fight for development.
Senior Human Rights Activist and the guest speaker of the program Mr. Charan Prasain appreciated the program and said when we are realistic then we can talk about quality. At the end of the program Mr. Narendra Khatiwada; President of Youth Advocacy Nepal thanked all the guest for their valuable time and also thanked all the participants for their presence.
